The dachshund also known as the wiener dog, badger dog,Doxie and sausage dog is a long bodied dog which can come in different varieties such as:short haired ( mostly known as wire haired) and long haired. The AKC nicknamed dachshunds ‘ ‘ Liberty pups .‘ ‘ Unfortunately Dachshunds are very prone to a problem called intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) In fact, one paper estimated that 1 in 5 dachshunds will be affected by IVDD in their lifetime. IVDD is more commonly known as a ‘  ‘ slipped disc.’

Miniature dachshunds

These tiny wiener dogs are confident, clever and hard-working whether the work involves chasing rabbits or warming their owner’s lap. Never afraid to let their presence be heard, a Miniature Dachshund makes a wonderful companion due to their loyalty and protectiveness. Dachshunds are generally even-tempered and affectionate, which combined with their smaller size makes them an ideal companion for children. However, they can be vocal and snappy if play gets too boisterous so they’re usually better suited to slightly older children. Here are some facts about miniature Dachshunds.

  • Loyal affectionate and good with people of all ages including older children.
  • Miniature Dachshunds are highly intelligent little dogs.
  • Playful and fun-loving by nature.
  • Full of personality and feisty.
  • Low maintenance on the grooming front.

Long haired dachshunds.

They’re spunky, affectionate dogs who also have a stubborn streak. Their nicknames include “wiener dog,” “sausage dog,” and “doxie.” Once upon a time, long-haired dachshunds were hunting dogs that braved badger dens. Though they can still be used to hunt, today, they’re more often seen as companion animals.Long-haired dachshund’s coats have a tendency to become easily knotted and tangled if they aren’t regularly groomed. For this reason, yes you should be looking at trimming your long-haired dachshund to help with the upkeep of their coat.

Short haired dachunds.

Dachshunds often bond closely with a single person. They may even become jealous of their owner’s attention and can, if not properly trained and socialized, become snappy. Smooth Dachshunds are the most popular variety in the United States. Their coats are short and shiny and need little grooming. Dachshunds love attention so by socialising your Dachshund from a young age with lots of people, dogs and experiences they will grow into happy and fun-loving adults. Dachshunds love human company so they can develop separation anxiety if left alone. Don’t buy a second Dachshund if you think it will solve any behavioural problems that your current Dachshund has. It may just make things worse. A paper published in 2020 concluded that aggressors were a mean of 16 months younger and 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) heavier than recipients.
