X Country Success at Season Finale

Compete in a competition

Represent the school in some way

It was another successful year for our boys and girls cross country teams with Erin, Lucy, Emily and Milly chosen to represent Bury.

During the final event of the cross country season, the boys were placed in 5th and the girls were in first place out of 20 schools. It all boiled down to a relay race at Bury Athletics track. The four boys and girls had to run 600 metres and the girls knew that a win would see them clinch first position and the team shield, the boys were still aiming for a top 3 spot.

Lucy ran the first of the gruelling 600m legs, coming back in a great position just behind two other schools, she handed the baton onto Millie, after 400 metres she confidently moved into second place. Ella took hold of the baton next and held on to 2nd place with the gap to first a measly 5 metres or so. Erin, looking more nervous than usual, took hold of the baton and the chase for first was on.

The gap didn’t widen but became narrower and narrower and with 100m to go Erin was 2m behind the girl from Lowercroft as they ran out of view behind some cabins. The crowd held its breath, as though we were waiting for the Apollo 13 to break through atmosphere (a film I have seen recently!), the first shirt to arrive, with 10 metres to go, was the bright orange vest of Holcombe Brook and the shield was ours!

Well done to all involved, and a special mention to Emily, who couldn’t run in the final two events due to a broken bone in her foot.
