Fizzlebert Stump

This term we are reading the hilarious A.F. Harrold book ‘Fizzlebert Stump – The Boy Who Ran Away From the Circus (and Joined the Library). In literacy lessons we will be completing lots of book related writing activities as well as drama and role-play. This will help deepen understanding of the characters and plot.

So far we have read the first 2 chapters and had lots of discussions about Fizzlebert’s thoughts and emotions. Children wrote letters to Fizzlebert and created a working wall of questions we would ask him if we met him, alongside questions we would love to ask the author. Additionally, we danced the cancan (as it’s mentioned and explained in chapter 1).

Children in year 4/5 – I’d love you to comment below with your opinions of the story so far!

  1. I love learning about Fizzleburt Stump and his crazy life at the circus, my favourite character so far is the sea lion because he does fishy tuna burbs. My favourite part of this book so far has got to be the part when Doctor Surprise tells Fizz to take back the book because nobody in the class knows what happens (unless you have read the book before). What is my favorite bit about A.F.Harold? hmm the way he like addressees the book to you for example: you should probably get an older parent or guardian to show you; There, got it now OK I will continue. This book (Fizzleburt Stump the boy who ran away from the circus and joined the library) is one of the most tremendous books I have ever read! I simply can not wait until the next chapter of the book is revealed!

  2. I love the first 4 chapters of the book(Fizzlebert stump the boy who ran away from the circus and joined the library ).

  3. I have enjoyed the book so far because it has been happy, sad, funny and really exciting. I would like to live in a circus but I think sometimes it would be quite lonely. Fizzlebert is an interesting character because he makes normal everyday things exciting!!!!! The funniest part of the story is when Billy laughed so much he wet his pants.

  4. I too am loving the book (and loving teaching you literacy based on the book!). Every day I look forward to looking at the wonderful work you have produced! Keep up the good work Y4/5!!

  5. I think The boy who ran away from the circus (and joined the library) is a really good book because it gives a lot of detail about what is happening and about the characters. My favourite character so far is the seal because he does fishy tuna burps and I bet that they are really stinky,I wouldn’t want to smell them!! I wouldn’t like to live in a circus because if you sleep while the show starts it would be really noisey and would wake me up.I can’t wait to read the next chapter. If you read the first few chapters and then stop you feel like you want to read more because it is really exciting and funny like when he put a boy called Billy who laughed so hard he wet himself.
I recommend you read this book because it is cool, funny and in some parts it makes you laugh so hard you might even wet yourself like Billy did!!

  6. I loved the story of Fizzlebert stump , as I think the circus would be a fun place to live.
The funniest part was when Fizzlebert put his head in the lion’s mouth, and Billy wet his pants.
My favorite character in the book is Fizzlebert’s mum, who dressed as a clown, and she never took anything seriously. If I lived in a circus , I would love to be either a trapeze artist or a fortune teller.
It is a fun book to read and kids love it.

  7. I have really liked working on this fabulous subject. My favourite Fizzlebert Stump character is Dr. Surprise because he’s always doing something completely different than what he’s been asked to do. My favourite part of the book is when Fizz tells Mrs Stinkthrottle and tricks her saying his name was John Smith and getting her to fill the form in. I likes it when he addresses the reader by saying its the end of the chapter and it will be a brilliant next one. Also, i love how he sums up the next chapter by giving us a marvelous synopsis at the start.

    1. I can see how much you are enjoying this book Owain, I had to try really hard to find some improvements for your last piece of writing!

  8. The thing I like most about Fizzlebert Stump is him doing the lion entertainment. I think a good book is one that addresses the reader and has good characters. My favourite characters are Fizzlebert because he is a good actor and Kevin because he is good at tidying the kitchen. I would not like to live in the circus because it would be cold and noisy and you would hear rain coming down on the tent.

    1. I enjoyed reading your comments Darcy and you worked so hard on Tuesday in the Learning Pod creating your own chapter, well done!

  9. In Fizzlebert I like the character Mrs Stinkthrottle, she’s really bossy and very stupid as she is always mean to Mr Stinkthrottle. It’s a good book because it’s funny when the French teacher just makes it up! I wouldn’t like to live in the circus because I wouldn’t have many friends. Also I really like Dr Surprise, he’s strange in many ways, like you probably wouldn’t think he needs so many library cards!!!

    1. Your comments are very perceptive Ellie, I wonder if there are other teachers who just ‘make it up’ !?

  10. Personally, I love Fizzlebert Stump because it’s really funny and I like it how the author A.F Harrold talks to you. My favourite character is a sea lion who is Fizz’s friend and he always does horrible fishy burps in Fizz’s face. Fizz is from a circus and his mum is a clown and his dad is a strongman.

    1. Great feedback Oliver. I really enjoyed reading this book too, AF Harrold is quite a wacky character as well isn’t he?
