Just a couple of months after a narrow 3-2 win vs Tottington in the League Cup final, we faced each other once again this evening, back at the fantastic facility at Top Park, in the Bury Schools Cup final.
On what was clearly a tense occasion, the boys kept their cool throughout and although we didn’t play our best football, we managed to see the game out and seal another 3-2 win creating history for Holcombe Brook Primary winning the double!
After just a few minutes, a lovely corner from Arnie was buried in off the post by Alfie T-Q. We had good control of the game but after losing possession on the 15 minute mark, Tottington countered and slotted away the equaliser. At times, it felt like we were trying to walk it in and were a little ‘shot shy’ despite the amount of crosses and through balls we tried. Jaiden pounced on an error and volleyed past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1. Jake, Theo and Oliver all came on and continued to drive us forward with Jake taking on their full back and was unlucky not to score himself. Theo and Arnie were a constant threat on the right wing and Oliver and Jaiden were working tirelessly to close down their defenders.
Charlie encouraged the boys to show more composure on the ball at half time but sadly we just couldn’t get our passing game going and often resorted to long balls. Early in the second half and a great ball from Alfie Bailey set Alfie T-Q on his way and he turned the defender inside out and bent the ball into the far corner. 3-1 up and we were looking solid at the back following a slight change to the formation at half time.
Oscar was having his best game we have seen in between the sticks with Bodhi cheering everyone on and ready to come on if needed. Alfie B and Max remained solid at the back and Charlie kept us ticking but the lads were clearly tiring as Tottington were throwing everything forward and had plenty of corners and free kicks that were launched into the box, with one floated effort hitting the top of the bar.
Their pressure continued and resulted in a Tottington low shot following a corner being ricocheted into our goal. 3-2 but thankfully the lads held on into added time and were unlucky not to get a fourth. We were loathed to make changes as felt extra time might be round the corner and we would need the fresh legs then but thankfully we held on and it was great to see the lads all celebrating together (see video links below).
A huge well done to all 11 boys and a big thanks to Mr Crawshaw and all the parents for their support throughout. It’s been a fantastic season which has seen the boys deservedly win some silverware and make their own little bit of HB history! (They also met Rico Lewis before the game!)
